Bluegrass-Model:
This description can be rather confusing as this type of music is no-where near as old as this type of instrument! However, bluegrass mandolins have gained a good reputation due to players, such as Bill Monroe (1911-1996), who in the 1930s developed this new style of music, but using traditional instruments.
The beginnings of bluegrass mandolins can be traced back to luthiers , such as Orville Gibson (1856-1918), who developed a flat-model mandolin based on the traditional German mandolin. By 1910 this form had taken over in the USA from the Neapolitan mandolin. Inspite of a lack of interest in such instruments during and after the First World War, there was a revival in popularity in the 1930s. Nowadays mandolins are used for many different styles of music.
